Driver CPC Legal Requirements

EU Directive 2003/59/EC introduced in September 2008 for PCV Drivers and
September 2009 for LGV Drivers, made it a requirement for drivers who hold that
entitlement on their licences to undergo 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years.

All course must be approved by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT)
and are administered by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA)

Existing Drivers are deemed to hold a Driver CPC by acquired rights, but must still
complete 35 hours of training by September 2014 and be able to provide evidence of
completion.
Driver CPC Exemptions
All LGV and PCV Licence holders, including categories C1 and D1 , must complete with
the exception of the following :

  • Drivers of vehicles with authorised  maximum speeds below 45kph

  • Armed Forces, Fire and Defence

  • Drivers who are road-testing vehicles

  • Emergency Services

  • Drivers of vehicles used for training

  • Incidental Drivers
